Poll on Nazarenes and Alcohol

While surfing www.naznet.com way too late tonight (this morning!), I found this interesting poll on Nazarenes' opinions on alcohol. Be sure to read comment #459 (about half way down - not actually the 459th comment on this strand) regarding how local churches respond to this issue.
Still no word on the rumored resolution to change the ban on alcohol to moderation. Maybe it was just a rumor.

Re: Alcohol Statement

I have been attending and participating in the General Assembly committees for about 4 decades now. Such a move as "moderation" instead of "leave it alone" is not likely to pass a committee or the General Assembly any time soon, regardless of what anyone thinks about the issue. We realize some of our members partake of alcohol. They are NOT being kicked out of the church nor are they being condemned. They are being tolerated with acceptance. This does not mean they have enough votes on the Assembly floor to pass any change in our present stance.

My name is not what is shown below but we live together. Yes, we are married to each other and have been for more than four decades.

As someone who grew up in the Nazarene church but does not attend one now, I find it refreshing that this is at least being discusssed. There is no where in the Bible where it says that drinking is wrong. It does say that drinking to the point of drunkedness is. That is the fine line and where I think many can become overly "religious and fanatical" in their way of thinking. What may be over indulging for one is not for another. There is no way to really pinpoint where the line is, so it will be hard for the "church" as a whole to make a decision as to what is right and wrong. It will be a matter of moral decision on a personal level, not the church as a whole.

I remember as a child, it was considered "wrong" to wear make up, go to movies, dance, swim co-ed, etc. Now? These things are common and laughed at in remembering. I actually was in college when my parents went to their "first" movie in my lifetime! So, times change and it's ok.
